When we look at Silat as an art, at Andersons Martial Arts Academy we must look at how it applies to a beginner and how and where it will be taught to you as a new, intermediate and advanced student. Sifu is not only teaching but educating in our Phase 2/3 Jeet Kune Do/Filipino Martial Arts class, in which we also cover a Silat curriculum. At this point the students basics are developed enough to progress them into filling their Jeet Kune Do with Silat (amongst other arts we save for this class) — this isn’t done to be fancy or showy, but to further their routing and understanding of the arts and how to seamlessly transition between ranges and tactics in all areas from empty hand to weapons, stand up and the ground #Ateam style. About Silat and Filipino Martial Arts at Andersons Martial Arts Academy Silat or Silat (“fighting by using techniques of self-defense”) is a Southeast Asian martial art with roots in the culture of the Malay World. This art is widely known in Indonesia but can also be found in varying degrees among the Malay-affiliated communities in Thailand and Cambodia. The highly sophisticated and comprehensive martial art from Southeast Asia is weapon based, empty handed and explores the ground and standup techniques. The Filipino martial arts taught at AMAA are drawn from 26 primary sources, as taught by Sifu Andersona nd as learned from his instructor Magulang Na Guro Dan Inosanto has spent his life training under.
In the US as long ago as the 1500’s, the Filipino Martial Arts have something to benefit everyone. Developed for “mass attack” as well as single opponent confrontations, the training heightens student’s awareness of their surroundings and teaches them to use their environment as tools of combat. Everyday objects, such as umbrellas, books, bandannas, etc., become effective means of self-defense in the hands of a properly trained individual.

Use of left and right hand techniques develop coordination. Been a part of the AMAA family for 10 years now and I can confidently say this place right here IS the most well rounded training studio in NYC. From fitness, competition to self defense, Anderson’s Martial Arts Academy is where it’s at.
Unlike most studios nowadays, solely focusing on the sport, AMAA focuses on what can happen in the real world and I strongly believe it’s important to train in both. They forge elite fighters and amazing practitioners of the Arts. That being said here’s my advice for success, just like anything else, start of with the fundamentals and build up from there. Having that foundation is very important in training Martial Arts and helps from being too overwhelmed especially if you’re brand new to training. Most importantly have fun and don’t be shy, literally everyone there, including the other students are down to earth and willing to help. I can’t say enough great things about Anderson’s Martial Arts Academy. I came to the school after looking long and hard for a good martial arts school that fit me, and I have been here for 4 years with no thought of training elsewhere.
The lineage and acclamations the school has received speak for themselves. AMAA has the world class training for everything from MMA, Muay Thai and Jiu Jitsu (gi & no gi), to awesome weapons and reality based street fighting classes. The whole staff – Phil, Chuck, Gus and everyone else are incredibly well rounded and knowledgeable. Sifu continues to surprise me with his knowledge, expertise and innovation. AMAA will teach you martial arts, but In addition will teach you how to think as a fighter, from the ring to the street. You will not be disappointed – just be ready to work.
I have trained in world class gyms, and this is my favorite. The instructors are thorough, friendly, and bad ass.
The head of the school, Sifu is a secret weapon, extremely knowledgeable and has a personality that makes you want to come to class and excel. I had the best experience, and only wish he had more academies across the country. Along with the boxing, muay thai and BJJ, who else teaches knife fighting?
The only problem is that there aren’t enough hours in a day to take all of the stuff offered at this school. I looked for the perfect martial arts school for years before finding Anderson’s. I knew I wanted to train hard and take a serious approach to martial arts, but I still wanted to enjoy myself and have a good time. It wasn’t an easy balance to find – until I came across Anderson’s. So many training schools in this city are focused on being trendy instead of building real skills and fostering respect for the art, the school, and the community.
Anderson’s went above and beyond anything I could have expected. I felt like I belonged, even as a newbie with absolutely no experience, and was encouraged from day one to challenge myself and do my best.
That’s priceless.
