Are you an emulator developer? If you'd like a user flair reflecting that. Hi, guys, I am thinking about getting a modded PS3 to be able to play the majority of games from PSX, PS2 and PS3 at one console, and from an HDD. I know that PSX and PS2 games are emulated in PS3, but how good is it?
I'm not looking at emulation alone, I want to emulate the experience of playing that console as much as possible (I have some flashcarts from 16-bit era consoles, and unfortunately there is no such way to run PSX or PS2 games on the original system from an HDD/SD card). So guys, does it feel like I was playing in the original console? Or should I stick to my PC to play PSX or PS2 games? So you might have some misunderstanding, and hopefully I can clarify that. There are original PS3 models that have full hardware support (Not emulation) of the PS2. Later on down the road, they removed one piece of the PS2 puzzle (I think the GPU, but I can't remember which one) and emulated just that part of the hardware, while keeping the majority of other parts in original hardware. Today, most modern PS3's don't have any of the PS2 hardware and thus have no backwards compatibility.
The only exceptions to this are a few rare digital PS2 games from PSN which as far as I can tell have very specific emulators written just for them alone and aren't usable by other games. So all that being said, which model of the PS3 are you planning on getting? The vast majority of them won't play PS2 games, and the ones that do cost much more than others, to the point where it's just easier to buy a used PS2 instead. I haven't tried it personally, but if you have a PS3 with CFW (i.e. Softmod) you should be able to play a good amount of PS2 games, but it requires some tinkering: you need to modify a PS2 ISO in order for the PS3 to recognize it as one of the 'PS2 Classics' that were released on the PSN. It shouldn't be that hard (Google is your friend), but it won't be as good as using an actual PS2 with FreeMCBoot. As far as PSX goes 99% of games will work just fine (regardless of whether you are using a legit disc/PSN download of you are pirating it), but you should look for a list of incompatible games just in case.
Mind, not all PS3 can be softmodded; since PS3 are prone to hardware issues you'll probably be better off buying a Slim and making sure it's one of the earlier models (i.e. Made before 2010); you'll want to Google which models can be downgraded and make sure you are buying one of them. Also, you'll probably have better luck asking similar questions on subs/forums that focus on PS3 hacking.
